Ingredients

  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Use a good quality oil for a delicious flavor. Avoid regular olive oil or light, as this will have a much milder (or no!) taste.
  • Lemon Zest: To add freshness and zing.
  • Balsamic Vinegar: This adds a sweet acidity and depth to each dip. Again, use a good quality vinegar.
  • Seasonings: Italian herbs, chili flakes, garlic powder, salt and black pepper

Recipe Variations

I love making this bread dipper with balsamic vinegar, but, if you prefer, you can skip the vinegar, or, try swapping it for white or red wine vinegar. Finely grated parmesan is an excellent addition to this dip.

Serving Suggestions

There’s nothing much more comforting than serving this with a warm, sliced baguette, and it works great with other crusty breads too that will soak up all of those flavors. The dip is also great to serve up on grazing or charcuterie boards, or try it drizzled over a salad.

Make Ahead and Storage

Once made, store this dip in an airtight jar and keep it refrigerated. It will keep well for up to 6 weeks. Let the oil come up to room temperature to serve. Freezing is not recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you make this with fresh garlic?

If I know that this dip will be enjoyed in the next day or two, I will use fresh garlic instead of powdered. Mince a clove (or two) and stir it in with the other ingredients. I like to use garlic powder if I’m making a bigger batch as it will keep in the fridge for a longer time. If made with fresh garlic, the dip can be kept for around 5 days.

Can you make this dip with flavored olive oil?

Infused extra virgin olive oil will work well. Lemon, garlic or herb oil are all great choices for extra flavor.
