Ingredients

  • Sour cream: Sour cream adds a nice richness and tanginess to this dip. It has a cooling effect which helps to balance out the spice from the jalapenos.
  • Jalapenos: I used jarred pickled jalapenos rather than fresh as they are slightly milder and break down more easily when blended. I also add in a little pickling juice from the jar for an extra enhanced flavor.
  • Lime: We use both the zest and Juice from a lime for a fresh zingy flavor.
  • Seasonings: Garlic powder, salt and pepper.

Recipe Variations

This lime jalapeno sour cream dip is pretty delicious as it is, but you can easily adjust it to suit your tastes.

  • Make it healthier: I prefer the taste and texture of full fat sour cream, but you can make this with low fat if you prefer. I haven’t tried it, but I will suspect you can also make this with Greek or plain yogurt.
  • Make it thicker: This is a fairly thin dip, it’s not runny, but not super thick. For a thicker dip, leave out the pickled juice and use more lime zest and omit the lime juice. You can also add in a tablespoon or two of mayonnaise.
  • Adjust the heat to your tastes: If you are particularly sensitive to heat, try adding in half the amount of jalapenos. Taste the dip and simply blend in more if you like it hotter.
  • Use fresh jalapenos: To make this less acidic, you can use fresh rather than jarred jalapenos. They are not as soft, so be sure to blend really well to break them down.
  • Make it vegan: Simply use a plant based sour cream.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it keep?

This jalapeno sour cream dip will keep well in the fridge for 2 to 3 days. Once blended, keep it covered and refrigerated to keep it fresh. Don’t leave out at room temperature for more than 2 hours.

Can you freeze it?

Because this dip is dairy based, it’s best not to freeze it. When thawed, dairy can become quite grainy. It will still be safe to eat, but the texture will change considerably.

Serving Suggestions

I like to garnish the dip with some freshly sliced sliced jalapeno and some chopped cilantro. It’s obviously perfect to serve with tortilla chips, or go for a healthier option and serve up some vegetable sticks. It’s also a great wing dipping sauce!

As well as dipping, this doubles up as a great sauce and spread. Drizzle over pizzas, tacos and nachos or as a spread for burgers and sandwiches.

Recipe Notes and Tips

  • Blend the ingredients together well so you have a smooth dipping sauce, scraping down the sides of the blender if needed.
  • Taste and adjust the seasoning to your liking. I found that a generous amount of salt does wonders!
  • Keep covered and refrigerated.
