Ingredients

  • Sweet potatoes: Cut the sweet potatoes into rounds about 1/4 inch in thickness before seasoning and baking.
  • Oil: Oil helps to cook the sweet potatoes more evenly and helps the edges to crisp up a little. Any high heat neutral oil like vegetable, avocado or canola will work well.
  • Seasonings: Paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper.

Recipe Variations

These sweet baked potato slices are pretty tasty and addictive as they are, but you can easily mix up the seasonings to suit the dish you are serving them with. Use some onion powder and some dried herbs for a more savory flavor, or if you like them sweeter, you can toss them in some brown sugar.

I love the hands off method of oven baking these rounds, but you could also fry them in a skillet with a little oil, in batches. This will result in a crispier bite, but will require a little more effort on your part.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use regular potatoes or yams in this recipe?

Yes! You can make these with regular potatoes, but I recommend that you par-boil the potatoes before slicing them, seasoning and baking. Regular potatoes are more dense, so if you just bake them in the oven without par-boiling, they will still be fairly firm in the middle.

Yams can be prepared in the same way, but may require a slightly longer time to the oven to get tender.

How long do sweet potatoes take to bake?

To get nice and tender, these sweet potato rounds will take around 40 to 50 minutes at 400F / 200c to bake, depending on the thickness. I cut these around 1/4 inch thick. Use a fork to check that they are soft in the middle before removing them from the oven.

Can you make them ahead of time?

These are great to serve straight out of the oven, but they will keep well covered in the fridge for 3 to 4 days. Reheat them on a baking sheet in a single layer in a pre heated oven at 400F / 200C for 5 to 10 minutes to serve.

Do you have to peel the sweet potatoes?

When I can cut down on kitchen prep time, I will! There’s no need to peel the sweet potatoes for this recipe, just give them a good scrub under cold water and you are good to go. The skin is a great source of fiber and lots of vitamins and minerals.

If you prefer, you can peel them before slicing and baking, they’ll still turn out great.

Recipe Notes and Tips

  • Try to slice the sweet potatoes slices at a similar thickness. This will help them to cook through evenly in the oven.
  • Ensure that the rounds are well coated in the oil and seasonings before baking.
  • Place the sliced sweet potato in a single layer on your baking sheet. If they are overlapping, they won’t cook evenly.
  • Flip halfway through cooking.
