Ingredients

  • Sweet potatoes: Peel and cube the sweet potatoes before combining with the other ingredients.
  • Oil: You can use any neutral high heat oil like canola or vegetable. The oil helps the sweet potato cubes to cook more evenly.
  • Honey: Use a natural honey for the best health benefits. It should be a runny honey so that it coats the sweet potatoes well.
  • Seasonings: Chili powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper. These savory seasonings compliment the honey so well and gives that delicious sweet and salty flavor with a hint of spice.

Recipe Variations

These honey roasted sweet potatoes are pretty delicious as they are, but you can easily mix thins up to suit your tastes. Make them vegan by swapping the honey with maple syrup and you can easily mix up the seasonings. The chili powder adds a little bit of heat, but paprika would work great in place of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you make this recipe with yams?

Yams are often mixed up with sweet potatoes, they are more potato like in texture and less sweet, so while they can be used in this recipe, they will result in a different finished dish. Yams have a denser texture so would require and extra 5 to 10 minutes of roasting time.

Do you have to peel the sweet potatoes?

Whilst the skin of sweet potatoes is perfectly edible, I do prefer to peel them for this recipe. If you prefer to skip the peeling, just give them a good wash and scrub under running water to remove and loose dirt and then chop them.

Can you make them ahead of time?

This side dish is best served on the same day it is roasted, as the sweet potatoes can start to get a little soggy of they sit. You can peel and dice them ahead of time, store them in a bowl of water in the fridge to prevent browning for up to 24 hours before roasting, and pat dry before tossing in the seasonings.

Recipe Notes and Tips

  • Try and cut the sweet potato as evenly as you can so that the cubes cook evenly. I prefer to use longer and thinner sweet potatoes that I then cut in half lengthways and then cube.
  • Be sure to line your baking sheet. As we use honey in this recipe it can make a bit of a mess on your baking sheet otherwise. If you don’t line it, remove the potatoes from the sheet as soon as they are cooked so that they honey doesn’t have time to cool and harden.
  • Bake the sweet potatoes in an even layer so that they roast evenly and flip halfway through cooking.
  • if you do have leftovers, they will keep well for a couple of days in the fridge and can be reheated at 400F / 200c for 10 minutes to warm through and crisp up.
