Ingredients

  • Green onions: Thicker and larger green onions will work better for this recipe, but thin ones will also work nicely. Just reduce the cooking time to make sure they don’t burn.
  • Seasonings: Salt, pepper, and garlic powder are enough to enhance their sweet and mild flavor. Depending on what I’m serving the onions with, I sometimes like to serve them with a sprinkle of grated parmesan cheese on top.
  • Lemon Juice: Freshly squeezed lemon juice will give them a tangy and zesty touch that goes so well with the smokiness of the grill.

Grilled green onions are a versatile addition to various dishes. Here are some of my favorite pairings:

Make Ahead and Storage

You can prep and season the onions a few hours ahead of time and have them ready to cook at the last minute.

They’re best enjoyed as soon as they’re cooked, but will also keep 2-3 days covered in the fridge. You can also serve them cold or reheat them in the microwave or for a couple of minutes on the grill or in a pan. They can also be enjoyed cold in salads.

Recipe Notes and Tips

  • Make sure the grill is very hot before you add the onions, this way you’ll get nice char marks.
  • There’s already oil on the onions, so there is no need to add extra oil to the pan or grates.
  • Only flip them once halfway through the cooking for the best result.
