Ingredients

  • Slaw Mix: To make this recipe super convenient and quick, I used a bagged slaw mix from the store.
  • Apples: Green apples, like Granny Smith, add a nice tangy sweetness to the slaw.
  • Mayonnaise: For a deliciously creamy slaw.
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil: A little oil helps to thin the dressing and makes it easier to coat the cabbage and apples.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: For a little tang. White wine vinegar can also be used.
  • Dijon Mustard: Sharp with a bit of spice, the dijon mustard adds a wonderful flavor. For a milder taste, you can use wholegrain instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you make this coleslaw with red cabbage?

I prefer to make this slaw recipe with white cabbage, it has a nice peppery flavor that works great with the honey and mustard dressing. Red cabbage can be used, it has a milder taste and adds a beautiful pop of color.

Can you make it healthier?

To reduce calories and fat, you can opt for a low fat mayonnaise. You can also swap half, or all of the mayo for Greek yogurt.

What are the best apples to use?

I like to use crunchy and tart green apples for this slaw, Granny Smith are my favorite. You can use sweeter apples like Gala if you prefer.

Serving Suggestions

This cabbage and apple slaw is great to serve up as a side for a weeknight dinner, and an excellent addition to a BBQ or picnic. It’s great served up with fish tacos, burgers, hot dogs and lots of other favorite recipes.

Make Ahead and Storage

To prevent the apple from browning, if you are making this ahead of time, be sure to make up the whole recipe so that they are coated in the dressing.

Once made, the slaw will keep well, covered in the fridge, for 2 to 3 days.

Because the slaw dressing is mayo based, it’s best not to keep it at room temperature for more than 2 hours. It is not suitable for freezing.

Recipe Notes and Tips

  • There’s no need to peel the apples, but you can if you prefer.
  • Dice the apple into small pieces so that it mixes well with the other ingredients and is easy to eat.
  • For best results, let the coleslaw sit in the fridge for 30 minutes before serving to let the flavors develop.
