Ingredients
- Potatoes: I love to use baby potatoes in this recipe. They require very little prep, and have a wonderful creamy texture to them.
- Onion: This recipe uses a large Spanish or yellow onion, they have a milder and sweeter flavor than white onions.
- Oil: Use a neutral flavored oil with a high smoking point. Avocado, vegetable and canola all work great.
- Seasonings: Salt, black pepper, garlic powder and paprika.

Frequently Asked Questions
These potatoes and onions come out great in the air fryer and take less time than oven roasting, but you can easily cook them in the oven if you don’t have an air fryer. Roast them at 400F / 200c for around 30 minutes.
I’ve had the best results with baby potatoes, and other waxy potatoes like reds will work well. Starchy potatoes will also work and will be fluffy rather than creamy. Larger potatoes should be cut into smaller cubes so that they cook through fully.
Because baby potatoes have less starch than Russets or Yukon Golds, there is no need to soak them first. Just give them a wash to remove any loose dirt, cut in half and they are ready to be cooked.

Serving Suggestions
Air fried potatoes and onions are a great veggie and potato side dish that will work with all kinds of main dishes. Try them with some of these favorites:
Make Ahead, Storage and Reheating
You can season the potatoes and onions up to an hour before you want to cook them. I wouldn’t prep them earlier than that as the potatoes may start to brown.
Once cooked, they will keep well, covered in the fridge, for up to 4 days. You can quickly reheat them in the air fryer at 400F / 200c for 3 to 5 minutes to serve.
Recipe Notes and Tips
- I prefer to cut the potatoes in half as you get more crispy edges and they are sure to cook through. Smaller potatoes can be left whole if you prefer.
- I love to have my onions slightly charred, if you want yours less done and softer, add them in half way through cooking the potatoes.
- Preheat the air fryer before adding the potatoes and onions. If your air fryer doesn’t have a preheat function, let it run at 400F / 200c for 5 minutes while you prep everything.
- This recipe is easily doubled, but if you do, you will need to shake the basket a few extra times during cooking to make sure that everything is cooked evenly.

These air fryer potatoes and onions are a simple but delicious side dish. Quick to prep and cook, they come out perfectly every single time!
