I love roasted potatoes, but don’t have them as often as I would like! For a quick weeknight dinner, they just take too long to make, so they are often saved for fancier dinners, or, when I have a bit more time on my hands. Not any more!

These air fryer roasted canned potatoes are my new favorite discovery! Crispy and fluffy roasted potatoes in less than 15 minutes, with no peeling or chopping?! I’m in!

I was a bit sceptical of using tinned potatoes, but let me tell you, they come out perfectly! Simply seasoned with garlic, salt and pepper, they are super flavorful, with beautifully crispy edges and tender flesh. This convenient potato side dish is a must try!

  • Canned potatoes: Use tinned potatoes in water for this recipe and drain them well before seasoning. They are partially cooked which means very little prep is needed and a shorter cooking time is required.
  • Oil: A little oil helps to get the outside of the potatoes nice and crispy, and helps them to absorb the flavors of the seasonings. Use a high heat neutral oil like canola, vegetable or avocado.
  • Seasonings: Salt, black pepper and garlic powder.

Recipe Variations

Air fried canned potatoes are easy to make to suit your tastes, simply use different seasonings that you have to hand. Use a little cayenne for a spicy bite, or try adding some dried Italian herbs or paprika.

I like to sprinkle over some fresh thyme to serve, and other fresh herbs like parsley, dill or basil will work great too.

Can you oven roast them?

I love to roast potatoes in the air fryer as it’s quicker, but you still get great results, but oven roasting works great too! Preheat your oven to 430F / 220c and place the potatoes on a foil lined baking sheet. Roast for around 45 to 50 minutes, turning half way through, til golden brown and crispy?

Are canned potatoes unhealthy?

Canned potatoes are not unhealthy. Because they are stored in water, they are slightly lower in nutrients compared to fresh. Tinned foods and veggies are great to stock up on it your pantry, they have a long shelf life, so if you can’t get to the shops, you’ve got options on standby.

How do you prepare canned potatoes to cook?

These potatoes take minutes to prep before air frying to crispy perfection. Drain them in a colander or sieve and then rinse them with water. Rinsing them will remove excess salt that is often placed in the water to help preserve them. Let them drip for a few minutes before tossing with the oil and seasonings.

Make Ahead, Storage and Reheating

You can prep the potatoes a few hours ahead of cooking them. Toss them in the oil and seasonings, then cover and keep refrigerated.

Once cooked, the roasted tinned potatoes will keep well in the fridge for up to 3 days. You can also freeze them for up to 4 months, just make sure hat they are fully thawed before reheating them.

Reheat leftover roasted potatoes in a preheated air fryer at 400f / 200c. Cook for 5 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through, and they’ll get nice and crispy again.

  • Preheat the air fryer before adding the potatoes to the basket. This will ensure you get nice crispy edges. If your air fryer doesn’t have a preheat function, let it run at 400f / 200c for 5 minutes before cooking them.
  • This recipe is easily doubled and halved. If you cook more and the potatoes don’t fit in a single layer, simply shake the basket a few extra times during cooking so that they brown evenly.

  • 2 cans potatoes in water (2 cans of 18.2oz / 540ml)
  • 2 tablespoons oil (canola, vegetable, avocado etc)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • pinch black pepper

Instructions

  • Preheat the air fryer to 400F / 200c.
  • Drain the potatoes from the water and place into a large bowl.
  • Add the oil and seasonings to the potatoes. Mix well with a spoon so that the potatoes are well coated.
  • Once the air fryer has preheated, place the seasoned potatoes in the air fryer basket and set to cook at 400f / 200c for 35 minutes.
  • Shake the potatoes halfway through cooking.
  • Check the potatoes for doneness from around the 30 minute mark.
